After days upon days of nonstop rain in the Southeast, the sky finally cleared above Horse Pens 40, Alabama—just in time for the second leg of the Triple Crown Bouldering Series.
On November 21, the classics were the first to go down. Climbers gathered around boulder problems like Bumboy (V3), Centerpede (V4) and Millipede (V5), eager to get points on the scorecard. The sun directed other climbers to the shade and the winner of the Stone Fort comp, Jeremy Walton, gave an impressive, swift send of God Module (V11) before moving on to attempt Skywalker (V8) and Chewbacca (V7).
The afternoon brought cloudier skies and more favorable temps for Horse Pens’s notoriously slopey top outs. As the sun started to set, tired climbers crowed around American Pie—a V8 dyno—as they watched Walton, Marcus Vasilevskis and others launch through the air over and over again hoping to catch the elusive jug.
Scents of campfire smoke and BBQ finally lured climbers out of the boulders for a feast followed by the award ceremony, music and a little more bouldering—for those who still had skin left.
Walton once again claimed victory overall with 10,901 points—1,451 points ahead of second place’s Nathan Drolet. Steven Augustine, with 8,732 points, rounded out the top three of the Men’s Open category.
Sarah Grainger, winner at Stone Fort, also continued her victory streak by checking off another win for the Women, with 5,955 points. Grainger was followed by Rachel Meyers, only 783 points behind, and Rachel Robinson in a close third with 5,166 points.
The Southeastern Climbers’ Coalition raised over $1,800 through raffles and membership sales that will go towards continued effort to preserve and maintain local climbing areas.
Climbers will have to wait until the spring (date TBT) for the third leg of the Triple Crown at Hound Ears in North Carolina due to an unseasonably wet fall. For more information on the Triple Crown Bouldering Series, please visit triplecrownbouldering.org.
