Margo Hayes and Sean Bailey were crowned the 2016 sport climbing national champions this weekend at Central Rock
in Boston, Massachusetts. The USA Climbing Sport and Speed Open National Championships took place March 18 and 19.
Hayes, 17, tied with Claire Buhreind for first place in the qualifying round—they were the only two women out of a field of 25 to top out both routes—and
in semi-finals, Hayes took third, behind Michaela Kiersch in second and Delaney Miller, last year’s national champion, in first.
In finals, the pinnacle event of the national sport climbing competition season, Hayes secured the title of national champion over runner-up Grace McKeenhan
and Kiersch, who took third. Twenty-five
On the men’s side, 51 climbers competed in the sport climbing competition. Bailey swept the field, winning qualifiers, semi-finals and finals, besting
last year’s champion Kai Lightner,
who took second place overall. Ben Isaac Tresco, in third, rounded out the podium.
In the speed climbing competiton, Libor Horza, a Czech climber and holder of the speed climbing “world record,” claimed victory with a finals time of 4.01 seconds. As a foreigner, however, he’s
not eligible to win the National Championship.
John Brosler, in second place overall with a finals time of 4.29 seconds, was crowned National Champion for speed climbing, followed by Max Hammer in second
(third overall) with a time of 4.77 seconds and Thomas Pitzel in third (fourth overall) with a time of 5.40 seconds.
Claire Buhrfeind took first for women in the speed comp with a finals time of 5.64 seconds, followed closely by Sidney Trinidad in second with 5.96 seconds
and Erica Meister in third with 6.36 seconds.
